Nevermore Review

7129598Title: Nevermore
Author: Kelly Creagh
Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she is paired with Varen Nethers for an English project, which is due—so unfair—on the day of the rival game. Cold and aloof, sardonic and sharp-tongued, Varen makes it clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her either. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give this enigmatic boy with the piercing eyes another look.

Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life.

As her world begins to unravel around her, Isobel discovers that dreams, like words, hold more power than she ever imagined, and that the most frightening realities are those of the mind. Now she must find a way to reach Varen before he is consumed by the shadows of his own nightmares.

His life depends on it

I wish I had taken more notes throughout this book. I find that I finish a book and go to write my review and pull up a blank.

Anyway, I really loved this book. I had tried reading this book before on my kindle, but put it down for some reason. I could have sworn I put it down, because I didn't like the writing. But reading it now, I really don't see how that would have been possible. The writing in this book was fantastic! The entire book was simply amazing. From the characters to the plot. It was the perfect dark/horror type of book to kick off the Halloween season! Let's move on into the break down.

What I Liked:

  • Character Development. I mention this in all of my reviews, weather it be good or bad. Character development is something very important to a story. This book was amazing with character development. Creagh took the time she needed to let the reader get a feel for every character. She gave them all their own quirks and backgrounds. There is nothing I hate more than a flat character, and none of Creagh's characters were flat in my opinion. Not even Brad.
  •  Gwen. This is so different than the listed above. I loved Gwen's character, not for the development of it, but for her personality! She was hilarous! Every book needs a Gwen! I wasn't feeling her there at the end, but at the time that Isobel needed her, I loved her! She was such a spot on supporting character for Isobel!
  • Varen. Another character gushing moment. Okay, Brittney, we get you like the characters, right? Hang with me for a second here. Varen is the goth kid that Isobel gets stuck with. Yes, you get that feeling of what he is all about, as a reader, but you are still wrong! I loved that. I loved how unpredictable this character was. He was dark and mysterious, but not really in a sexy way. Then he was sexy, just out of nowhere, with his actions and it left you like, did he really just... OHMIGOD!
  • Real issues. This book is categorized as Paranormal Horror. So you expect stuff freaky to happen. But what I like in this book, that I haven't found in any other paranormal book, is it deals with real issues. Isobel falls off the top of the social ladder to hit the ground and we get to see how that affects her. And I think it was written very realistically.  Minus the seeing weird men in the mirror.
  • World Building. I love how the author describes things, especially if it's something we don't see on a regular basis, or something we don't see at all. I envy authors that can string words together as beautifully as this one did to make such beautiful images in our heads. So vivid that I fear I would hate the movie if ever made, because it wouldn't do they place in my head justice.
  • Edgar Allen Poe. I can't really say much on this, because of  spoilers.  I will say that I love how the author described Poe and incorporated his work, the way she did, into this book.
  • The Creatures. I loved all the creatures that came from this author, good or bad. They were all very exciting to read about.

What I Didn't Like:

  • Migraines. I hate how lightly books toss this word about. Well, people in genral, but this is a book blog, so we will stick with books. In an instance in this book Isobel says she has a bad migraine and then goes to cheer practice and does a lot of flips. You can't do that with a migraine. Myself, I suffer from migraines and it is all I can do to turn on the light in the bathroom without screaming in pain. They are very painful and most the time make you nauseous. So flips would really be out of the question. Isobel had a bad headache, not a migraine. This might seem like a silly point to put in a review, but it is my opinion.
  • Isobel's Dad. I really didn't understand the reasoning behind this character some of the time. Most of the time, actually. I really hope she elaborates more about why he is the way he is in the next book. Otherwise, most of his time in the book, was a waste. He said nothing helpful and was very rude most of the time. I mean, it would have been fine if it helped moved the story along, but a lot of the time it didn't. And he was closed minded. But then again, part of his character. So let's stick with pointlessness.

Would I Recommend This Book:

  • Yes. I would recommend this book to any YA readed looking for a good Halloween read or just a horror book. It is massive, but surprisingly a quick read once you get going. I read it in 2 days.
The second one is on it's way to me in the mail, should be here Monday according to the tracking info. I don't know if I can wait that long with the cliffhanger this one left!
